Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) is a group of hardware, software tools, and protocol that allow you to use the Internet as the transmission medium for placing telephone calls. It encapsulates the voice data into IP packets and transmits the packets over the Internet (rather than using PSTN). An obvious advantage is that the user does not have to pay a toll or surcharge for the call. All he or she has to pay is the Internet access ISP fee, usually a flat fee per month. This is similar to sending e-mails, where the user is not charged for every message delivered or sent. It is also known as IP telephony (IPT), or Internet telephony and voice over Internet. Following are some facts about VoIP:

Two preferences dialog boxes are used for creating an appearance and setting some attributes for your signatures. These include: n Security Preferences. You use the Security Preferences to create digital ID appearances for your personal digital IDs. If you want to add a logo, analog signature, symbol, or some text to an ID, you can do so by clicking the New button and choosing from various settings in the Configure Security Appearance dialog box. n Advanced Preferences. If you have an ID configured such as the two shown in Figure 26.8, the ID(s) appears listed in the Appearance list in the Security Preferences dialog box. An alternate method for providing access to SAMBA is to restrict access to certain directories to specific users. To do this, you must enable your users to have access to the SAMBA server. You need to do the following: 1. Make sure each user has an account on the machine hosting the SAMBA server. 2. Provide each user with a SAMBA password. You can do this using the smbpasswd command. At a terminal prompt, assume superuser privileges and type the command smbpasswd username, where username is the name of the user that you want to add. You are prompted for a password. Type in a password. You are asked to confirm it. At this point, the user should be able to access the SAMBA server. Any share that has user-level security enabled will require the user to enter his or her password before accessing that share. Users can change their SAMBA passwords by logging into the host machine and giving the smbpasswd command themselves. They are prompted for their old password and then asked to give and confirm a new password.
