Author s Note 19.6 The system development team must establish the convention for transitioning from one mode of operation to another. For example, do you establish an entry criterion for the next mode or an exit criterion for the current mode Typically a mode does not have both entry and exit criteria. Why The transition from the current mode, n, to the next mode, n + 1, is a single transition. You do not specify the exit criterion for the current mode and then specify that same condition as the entry criterion for the other side of the modal interface. In most applications, the best approach is to de ne only the exit criterion for the current mode of operation. Describing Modal Transitions. Once you establish a conceptual view of the system phases and modes, the next step is to characterize the triggering events and conditions for initiating the modal transitions. One mechanism for accomplishing this is the mode transition table shown in Table 19.2. In general, Table 19.2 depicts how a system transitions from its current mode: leftmost column to the next mode, which is the rightmost column. Interior columns de ne information relating to the transition conditions. Each row in the table represents a single mode of operation and includes a numerical transition ID. Transition information includes: identi cation of the triggering source or event, the type of event asynchronous or synchronous and any transition resource or time constraints for completion of the transition. Consider the following example from Table 19.2.

To validate the seamlessness and transparency of both the OpenOODB approach to persistence and also our name management and interoperability extensions to the OpenOODB, we developed JSPIN, a Java API for the OpenOODB. The design of JSPIN is described in "Our spin on persistent Java: The JavaSpin approach." [Kaplan 1996]. Its implementation and some comparative performance studies based on the 001 benchmark are described in "Toward assessing approaches to persistence for Java" [Ridgway 1997]. Efforts to extend JSPIN further to support persistence for classes as well as for instances are described in "Toward class evolution in persistent Java" [Ridgway 1998]. Here we briefly outline our goals, our approach, and our experience with the JSPIN effort.

Configuration management is the process of discovering, monitoring, tracking, and updating the configuration of managed resources. This process includes tracking versions of the hardware configuration, and often more importantly, the software and firmware elements installed on the resources as well as software licenses. In the case of blade server systems, the configuration of all components in the chassis or rack will be defined, monitored, and if needed, updated including the redundant and shared components as well as the individual blades. Configuration management is an area in which products utilizing the CIM model can contribute greatly, allowing management of all resources via use of CIM information. IBM, HP, Dell, Sun, Microsoft, Oracle, Symantec/Veritas, and others have CIM support (to varying degrees), both in their managed resources and in their management tools. Configuration management also includes the functions required for provisioning and reprovisioning blades, as discussed later in this chapter.
